Previous workshops and seminars
Below are a few examples of workshops and seminars that Carolyn has previously run and are available for request by clubs and organizations.
Workshops
Injury prevention workshop
This workshop educates owners on how we can make simple changes in our dog's lives to reduce the likelihood of injury. Owners that participate in dog sports know just how much more physically demanding these sports are becoming for our dogs. Take agility for example- tighter turns, more complex jumping skills, difficult contact approaches, and the push for faster course times. We need to prepare our dogs for these challenges and minimize the chance of injuries. But even the companion dog can become injured from chasing a squirrel, jumping off furniture, or slipping on wet grass. This workshop reviews common causes of injury as well as prevention strategies to keep your canine partner from the sidelines.
Plank workshop series
The plank level 1 workshop introduces teams new to using wooden planks in their canine conditioning program to this simple yet versatile piece of equipment. This workshop also includes a FREE anti-slip wooden plank for each handler, so that they can go home and start practicing the very next day! Plank level 2 progresses basic exercises demonstrated in level 1 and incorporates other balance and fitness props by pairing them with the plank to increase the difficulty level.
Conformation and canine fitness: a winning combo!
Conformation enthusiasts understand the importance of physical conditioning, foot timing, reach and drive, balanced gait, and a beautiful topline in their conformation dogs. But not everyone knows how to use canine conditioning to enhance these elements and improve their dog’s chances of winning. Participants will walk away with a variety of core, front and rear strengthening exercises that will have their dog standing out in the ring.
Seminars
Carolyn has also proudly partnered with Jess Martin, world champion dog trainer, of Agile Dog Training, to jointly offer seminars for the agility enthusiast that cover both handling and obstacle skills with conditioning and body awareness skills for the canine agility athlete.
Progressive Jumping Seminar Series (Three Part Series)
Agility is primarily made up of jumps which requires a variety of skills to effectively and properly navigate including bending, extension, collection, slicing and diving. With solid foundation and training ALL Dogs have the potential to become successful jumping dogs. This seminar series is designed to enhance the skill set of the entire dog/handler team- Jess Martin covers handling skills and understanding of how to influence your dog's jumping decisions and Carolyn reviews a variety of exercises to support and strengthen in the skills needed to maximize jumping potential.
Stopped Contacts Seminar
There is more to a good stopped contact than meets the eye. How the two-on two-off skill is trained and progressed can influence how reliably your dog will perform it. Stopped contacts are also more demanding on the shoulder than running contacts and should be conditioned for accordingly. In this seminar, Carolyn reviews key exercise principles designed for successful two-on two-off contacts, with special emphasis on shoulder strength, limb awareness, and rear foot targeting. Jess Martin reviews how to train the skill on equipment for reliability and to ensure your dog's understanding of the criteria.
