THE MISSING PIECE IN MOST SPORT DOG FITNESS PROGRAMS - Why your dog can be strong, fast, and powerful — and still be missing something critical..

Last week I asked a question worth coming back to. If your dog's balance were tested right now — by something unpredictable, something that came out of nowhere on course, on the field, or in the water — would their body know what to do?

The answer depends less on how strong or fast your dog is, and more on a system that doesn't always get the deliberate attention it deserves. To understand why, we need to look at what balance and stability actually requires from the body — and why those requirements are so different from what most canine fitness training delivers.

WHAT BALANCE AND STABILITY ACTUALLY MEAN

Balance and stability aren't general qualities that come along for the ride when a dog gets fit. They refer to something specific: the body's ability to maintain joint alignment, control movement, and adjust quickly when balance is challenged.

Every time a dog lands from a jump, collects for a tight turn, accelerates out of a flyball box, launches for a disc, drives off a dock, decelerates suddenly, or takes an unexpected step, the stability system is working. It maintains control, absorbs force, and keeps movement where it’s supposed to be. It operates constantly and mostly invisibly throughout every run, relying on a group of muscles that are fundamentally different in design, function, and training requirements from the large muscles responsible for power and speed.

TWO VERY DIFFERENT SYSTEMS 

Think about a hockey team. The first and second lines — your players with power, speed, and skill — get the most ice time and generate the most visible results. They're the ones making the big plays when it counts. 

​But lines three and four are just as essential to the outcome of a game. They rotate in, absorb pressure, protect the starters, and do the consistent, unglamorous work that keeps the whole team functioning across a full sixty minutes. Without them, lines one and two break down by the third period — not because they weren't talented enough, but because no athlete can sustain peak output without a strong supporting system around them.

​A sport dog's body works the same way. The large, visible muscles responsible for speed, power, and explosive movement are lines one and two — generating the force that makes a sport dog fast and athletic. Working continuously alongside them, around every joint throughout the body, is a different group entirely: the stabilizing muscles. Smaller, deeper, and built for a completely different role, these are the supporting lines that allow the power-generating muscles to do their job safely across a full career.

 WHAT ARE STABILIZERS AND WHAT DO THEY DO? ​

Stabilizing muscles sit deep within the body, close to the joints. Their job is not to generate the movements you can see — it's to maintain joint alignment, control unwanted motion, and manage force as it travels through the body during athletic movement. They are not the muscles that make a dog look powerful; they are the muscles that make it possible to be powerful without things going wrong.

What distinguishes stabilizers from power muscles is their physical design. They are primarily slow-twitch endurance fibres, built to work continuously rather than in explosive bursts. While the large power muscles fire hard and fast to generate speed and drive, stabilizers maintain a low, steady level of activity to keep the joints controlled and protected throughout movement.

A systematic review of stabilizer muscle characteristics published in Physiotherapy Canada identified their defining role as contributing to joint stiffness through co-contraction — creating a stable environment around each joint so that the larger muscles can generate force safely within it.

Strength creates force. Stability controls it.

This is the piece that often gets overlooked — the stabilizers are the missing piece of the puzzle 🧩.

WHY THEY DON'T GET TRAINED BY ACCIDENT

The training that develops power, speed, and movement patterns — agility repetitions, sprint work, plyometric conditioning — develops the fast-twitch muscles designed for force production. All of that work is valuable and necessary, but stabilizers are not recruited the same way and do not respond to the same training stimuli.

Going back to the hockey analogy: you cannot develop your supporting lines by running your first line harder. They are different athletes, built for a different purpose, and they need to be trained deliberately and specifically.

In my experience, when I meet with a new client and ask about their dog's current fitness routine, deliberate stabilizer work is rarely part of the picture — if it appears at all. Not because handlers aren't trying, but because this system simply isn't what most fitness programs are built around.

The question worth sitting with is this: how much of your dog's training week is spent specifically and intentionally challenging the deep stabilizing system — not stumbling into some balance as a byproduct of other exercises, but working it on purpose? 🤔

Because for many dogs, this is the missing piece.

HOW THIS SHOWS UP IN REAL DOGS 

In practice, a lack of stability does not always present in a consistent or obvious way.
For some dogs, there is a clearer pattern. Certain conditions or demands — a change in surface, a tighter line, a more challenging effort — tend to expose moments where control is lost or needs to be regained.

In others, it is far less apparent. Movement appears steady and efficient the majority of the time, and any minor loss of footing can easily be attributed to the environment or the situation rather than something within the dog’s physical preparation.

Despite these differences in presentation, the underlying demand on the body remains the same. Even occasional losses of stability require the joints and surrounding structures to absorb and manage force in a less controlled way, and over time, that repeated demand begins to accumulate beneath the surface.

When the stabilizing system is trained with intention, this is where things start to change.

WHAT CHANGES WHEN STABILITY IS IN PLACE 

When a dog's stabilizing system is well developed, the difference shows up across everything they do. Landings are cleaner because the joints are actively supported through impact. Turns are more efficient because the body can control deceleration and redirect without losing alignment. The unexpected moments — the weird step, the sudden slip — are managed quietly and effectively, the way Grey managed his footing on the teeter before anyone watching had time to react.

Plyometric work, conditioning drills, agility practice, flyball training, disc sessions, dock diving — all of it is performed on a more solid base, which means the power muscles can do their job better too.

C in general, although a recent unexpected injury in my really well conditioned dog made me take particular focus on his stabilisers, which were weak, so we are trying for more of D. But it’s hard… the big muscles are easy to focus on 🙈

C I think. I work all exercises on stable surfaces first then move most to unstable equipment. So not sure if that really is stability training, as such.
