That is a starting point &mdash; but it is nowhere near the full picture.</span></div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span>Effective stability training works by creating controlled instability &mdash; situations where the body has to work harder to maintain alignment and joint control than it would on a flat, predictable surface. What that looks like, though, is not the same for every dog. &#128062;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>A dog with a longer, lower build moves through the world differently than one that is compact and upright. A dog returning from injury, managing a health condition, or carrying the wear of many active seasons needs a different starting point than one who has been fit and sound throughout. Experience level, age, body structure, fitness history, and health status all shape what appropriate stability work looks like for each individual dog &mdash; and getting that right matters as much as doing the work at all.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>The key in all cases is the same: controlled challenge. The goal is never to overwhelm the dog, but to engage the stabilizing system just enough that it has to work and adapt. When the challenge exceeds what the dog is ready for, the stabilizing system doesn't develop &mdash; the dog compensates, braces, loses confidence, or shuts down instead, and the opportunity is lost entirely.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>That balance between challenge and control is what separates meaningful stability development from simply putting a dog on unstable equipment and hoping for the best.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700"><font color="#5848b7">&#8203;WHAT THIS CAN LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE&nbsp;</font></span></span><br /><br /><span><span>"Run and find balance" is one of the exercises I use regularly, and it is a good example of how deceptively simple effective stability work can be &mdash; and how much the outcome depends on how it is taught. &#127919;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>When it is introduced well and progressed thoughtfully, it becomes a powerful tool for developing body awareness, postural control, and the kind of quiet, automatic stability that shows up in the moments that matter. Each layer builds on the last, giving your dog time to understand the criteria, develop control, and build confidence before the challenge increases.<br />&#8203;</span></span><br /><span><span>Move through the progressions too quickly, though, and something shifts. You start to see compensation. Hesitation. A dog that braces rather than balances, or that loses the confidence they had when things felt manageable. It responds to work that is deliberate, targeted, and built with progression in mind &mdash; not because it can't coexist alongside other training, but because it simply won't develop without specific, intentional attention.<br /></span></span><br /><span><span>Most dogs aren't missing this because their owners don't care. They're missing it because there has never been a clear, structured way to work on it &mdash; and because it's easy to assume that a dog who is fit, fast, and strong has all the pieces in place. Often, they almost do. But the stabilizing system is the piece that doesn't come along for free with everything else, and it's the piece that matters most when the unexpected happens. &#128161;<br /></span></span><br /><span><span>One more time through the hockey lens: you would not put your third and fourth lines into the most demanding situations before they have built the conditioning and confidence to handle them. You develop them progressively, give them increasing responsibility as their capability grows, and trust the process. The stabilizing system works exactly the same way &mdash; build the foundation first and add challenge when it is earned.<br /></span></span><br /><span><span>The results accumulate quietly over time, and then one day, something looks different. Cleaner movement. Better control. More confidence in the moments that used to feel uncertain. &#128200;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700"><font color="#5848b7">WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU AS AN OWNER&nbsp;</font></span></span><br /><br /><span><span>This is the part worth sitting with for a moment, because while this series has focused on the dog, something shifts for the owner too.<br /></span></span><br /><span><span>When you know your dog's body is prepared &mdash; not just strong, not just fit, but stable, controlled, and capable of handling the unexpected &mdash; you show up differently. There is a confidence that comes from knowing the whole system has been trained, not just the visible, powerful parts, but the deeper support system that protects everything else.<br /></span></span><br /><span><span>For some, that means walking to the start line knowing their dog is as ready as they can be. For others, it's the quieter moments &mdash; a dog that recovers cleanly when a paw slips on a wet floor, navigates uneven ground on a hike without a second thought, or takes an unexpected step on the stairs and simply carries on. The unpredictable doesn't only happen on course, and the body that handles it well in sport handles it well everywhere. To understand why, we need to look at what balance and stability actually requires from the body &mdash; and why those requirements are so different from what most canine fitness training delivers.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><strong><font color="#5848b7">WHAT BALANCE AND STABILITY ACTUALLY MEAN</font></strong></span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Balance and stability aren't general qualities that come along for the ride when a dog gets fit. They refer to something specific: the body's ability to maintain joint alignment, control movement, and adjust quickly when balance is challenged.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Every time a dog lands from a jump, collects for a tight turn, accelerates out of a flyball box, launches for a disc, drives off a dock, decelerates suddenly, or takes an unexpected step, the stability system is working. It maintains control, absorbs force, and keeps movement where it&rsquo;s supposed to be. It operates constantly and mostly invisibly throughout every run, relying on a group of muscles that are fundamentally different in design, function, and training requirements from the large muscles responsible for power and speed.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><strong><font color="#5848b7">TWO VERY DIFFERENT SYSTEMS&nbsp;</font></strong></span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">Think about a hockey team. The first and second lines &mdash; your players with power, speed, and skill &mdash; get the most ice time and generate the most visible results. They're the ones making the big plays when it counts.&nbsp;<br /><br />&#8203;But lines three and four are just as essential to the outcome of a game. They rotate in, absorb pressure, protect the starters, and do the consistent, unglamorous work that keeps the whole team functioning across a full sixty minutes. Without them, lines one and two break down by the third period &mdash; not because they weren't talented enough, but because no athlete can sustain peak output without a strong supporting system around them.<br /><br />&#8203;A sport dog's body works the same way. The large, visible muscles responsible for speed, power, and explosive movement are lines one and two &mdash; generating the force that makes a sport dog fast and athletic. Working continuously alongside them, around every joint throughout the body, is a different group entirely: the stabilizing muscles. Smaller, deeper, and built for a completely different role, these are the supporting lines that allow the power-generating muscles to do their job safely across a full career.</span><br /></div>  <div>  <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span>&nbsp;<strong><font color="#5848b7">WHAT ARE STABILIZERS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?&nbsp;</font></strong></span></span>&#8203;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.mcrehabilitation.com/uploads/1/1/5/8/115826051/published/shades-dog-walk.jpg?1776961722" alt="Picture" style="width:588;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span><span>Stabilizing muscles sit deep within the body, close to the joints. Their job is not to generate the movements you can see &mdash; it's to maintain joint alignment, control unwanted motion, and manage force as it travels through the body during athletic movement. They are not the muscles that make a dog look powerful; they are the muscles that make it possible to be powerful without things going wrong.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>What distinguishes stabilizers from power muscles is their physical design. They are primarily slow-twitch endurance fibres, built to work continuously rather than in explosive bursts. While the large power muscles fire hard and fast to generate speed and drive, stabilizers maintain a low, steady level of activity to keep the joints controlled and protected throughout movement.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>A systematic review of stabilizer muscle characteristics published in </span><span>Physiotherapy Canada</span><span> identified their defining role as contributing to joint stiffness through co-contraction &mdash; creating a stable environment around each joint so that the larger muscles can generate force safely within it.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700">Strength creates force. Stability controls it.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700">This is the piece that often gets overlooked &mdash; the stabilizers are the missing piece of the puzzle &#129513;.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span><strong><font color="#5848b7">WHY THEY DON'T GET TRAINED BY ACCIDENT</font></strong> </span></span><br /><br /><span><span>The training that develops power, speed, and movement patterns &mdash; agility repetitions, sprint work, plyometric conditioning &mdash; develops the fast-twitch muscles designed for force production. All of that work is valuable and necessary, but stabilizers are not recruited the same way and do not respond to the same training stimuli.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Going back to the hockey analogy: you cannot develop your supporting lines by running your first line harder. They are different athletes, built for a different purpose, and they need to be trained deliberately and specifically.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>In my experience, when I meet with a new client and ask about their dog's current fitness routine, deliberate stabilizer work is rarely part of the picture &mdash; if it appears at all. Not because handlers aren't trying, but because this system simply isn't what most fitness programs are built around.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>The question worth sitting with is this: how much of your dog's training week is spent specifically and intentionally challenging the deep stabilizing system &mdash; not stumbling into some balance as a byproduct of other exercises, but working it on purpose? &#129300;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700">Because for many dogs, this is the missing piece.</span></span><br /><br /><span><strong><font color="#5848b7">HOW THIS SHOWS UP IN REAL DOGS&nbsp;</font></strong></span><br /><br /><span><span>In practice, a lack of stability does not always present in a consistent or obvious way.</span></span><br /><span><span>For some dogs, there is a clearer pattern. Certain conditions or demands &mdash; a change in surface, a tighter line, a more challenging effort &mdash; tend to expose moments where control is lost or needs to be regained.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>In others, it is far less apparent. Movement appears steady and efficient the majority of the time, and any minor loss of footing can easily be attributed to the environment or the situation rather than something within the dog&rsquo;s physical preparation.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Despite these differences in presentation, the underlying demand on the body remains the same. Even occasional losses of stability require the joints and surrounding structures to absorb and manage force in a less controlled way, and over time, that repeated demand begins to accumulate beneath the surface.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>When the stabilizing system is trained with intention, this is where things start to change.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span><strong><font color="#5848b7">WHAT CHANGES WHEN STABILITY IS IN PLACE&nbsp;</font></strong></span></span><br /><br /><span><span>When a dog's stabilizing system is well developed, the difference shows up across everything they do. Landings are cleaner because the joints are actively supported through impact. Turns are more efficient because the body can control deceleration and redirect without losing alignment. The unexpected moments &mdash; the weird step, the sudden slip &mdash; are managed quietly and effectively, the way Grey managed his footing on the teeter before anyone watching had time to react.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Plyometric work, conditioning drills, agility practice, flyball training, disc sessions, dock diving &mdash; all of it is performed on a more solid base, which means the power muscles can do their job better too.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700">The whole team is on the ice. &#129482;</span></span><br /><br /><span><span><strong><font color="#5848b7">COMING NEXT WEEK&nbsp;</font></strong></span></span><br /><br /><span><span>So what does deliberately training the stabilizing system actually look like?</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Next week we get practical &mdash; weight shifting, balance challenges, stability under load, and what intentional stabilizer training involves in practice. A foot slides. A limb shoots out. The body scrambles to find its footing.<span><span></span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Most of the time the dog recovers and carries on, and we breathe out and keep running. But not always. Sometimes they get up and keep going. Sometimes they don't. And even when they do, that moment tends to stay with you &mdash; because you know it doesn't always end that way.</span></span>&#8203;</div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong><span><span><font color="#5848b7">A MOMENT WITH GREY&nbsp;</font></span></span></strong><br /><br /><span><span>I want to share a clip of Grey when he was about 18 months old, still learning the teeter. Watch his left hind leg as he works his way across. For just a moment, he loses his footing &mdash; what we often call "blowing a tire". And then, quietly and almost matter-of-factly, he replaces the foot and gets back into his end behaviour on the teeter before I could even react.</span></span></div>  <div class="wsite-youtube" style="margin-bottom:10px;margin-top:10px;"><div class="wsite-youtube-wrapper wsite-youtube-size-auto wsite-youtube-align-center"> <div class="wsite-youtube-container">  <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CgJ3ozETmiQ?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">What struck me wasn't the slip. It was the recovery. Grey didn't panic. He didn't freeze, overcorrect, fall off, or scramble wildly. He simply found his footing again &mdash; calmly, efficiently, seamlessly &mdash; and finished the job. Think about how you drive on the highway. These are the things that can turn an ordinary moment into an unpredictable one:</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>&mdash; Surface grip that changes between the morning walk-through and the afternoon run</span></span><br /><span><span>&mdash; Grass fields with ruts, uneven patches, or soft spots invisible at speed</span></span><br /><span><span>&mdash; Trial equipment that shifts subtly under a dog's weight</span></span><br /><span><span>&mdash; Momentum that carries a dog past their intended landing spot</span></span><br /><span><span>&mdash; A takeoff stride that's just slightly off, changing everything about the landing</span></span><br /><span><span>&mdash; Weather that alters footing mid-run with no warning</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>And here's the part that doesn't get talked about enough: sometimes conditions look completely normal. A scramble that looked minor in the moment, but wasn't.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>What those videos almost always show isn't a dog that was unfit or undertrained.
